How does ozone therapy work?

Ozone (O₃) is a supercharged, three-molecule form of oxygen (O₂) that is highly reactive in the body, which is what makes it so therapeutically powerful. When ozone enters the body either through an IV, insufflation, or breathing ozonated olive oil (BOOO), it reacts with biological fluids and tissues to produce ozone byproducts called ozonides, which trigger a cascade of healing responses such as improving circulation, stimulating antioxidant production, activating the immune system, and selectively targeting harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi without damaging healthy cells. The result is a therapy that addresses root causes rather than symptoms, and one that is well-suited for everything from chronic and complex conditions to the common cold.

Three ways to receive ozone therapy

Choose your ozone treatment method

Ozone can be administered multiple different ways: intravenously (IV), via insufflations, or breathing ozonated olive oil (BOOO).
Most Systemic

Ozone IV Therapy

30-45 minutes
A small sample of your blood is drawn, ozonated with medical-grade ozone by one of our RNs, and returned intravenously. As it circulates, oxygen moves into organs and tissues stimulating circulation, oxidizing harmful substances, and fueling cellular healing throughout the body. Feels like a regular vitamin IV and is available at standard and high doses.
One-time G6PD lab and annual prescription required for High-Dose IV Ozone
IV Ozone is not approved in pregnancy
Best for:
Chronic conditions
Lyme disease
EBV
Anti-aging
Autoimmunity
Heavy metal detox
Infections
Quick Treatment

Ozone Insufflations

Sessions just take minutes!
Ozone gas is administered painlessly into the ears, nose, rectum, or vagina through a needle-less syringe, each targeting different therapeutic outcomes. Ear and nose address sinus, brain, and respiratory health. Rectal is the second-most systemic method after IV. Vaginal targets reproductive health, UTIs, and postpartum healing.
Rectal and vaginal installations are not approved in pregnancy
Best for:
Sinus infections
Brain fog
Ear infections
Tinnitus + vertigo
Yeast infections
Postpartum healing
Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Safe for All Ages

Breathing Ozonated Olive Oil (BOOO)

20-30 minutes
Ozone is infused into extra virgin olive oil and inhaled through a nasal cannula over 20–30 minutes. The oil humidifies and dilutes the ozone, making it safe to breathe directly into the lungs. Ideal for lung and airway health, allergies, sinusitis, bronchitis, and asthma. Safe for all ages including infants.
Best for:
Bronchitis
Sinusitis
Allergies
Congestion
Lip + tongue tie recovery
Upper respiratory infections

TIPS + FREQUENCY

Get the most from your ozone therapy session

Arrive well hydrated

Especially important for Ozone IV. Hydration supports vein access and helps your body circulate the ozonated blood more effectively.

Start with the right modality for your health goals

Not sure which ozone format to start with? A good rule of thumb: for systemic or chronic conditions, start with IV ozone or rectal insufflation. For sinus, brain fog, or respiratory issues, ear/nose insufflation or BOOO is your entry point. If you're unsure, just call us!

Commit to a protocol

For Ozone IV, we recommend 8 sessions over 4 weeks (2x per week) for meaningful results. Insufflation and BOOO can be done daily or as symptoms arise and persist. Our team will help you build a plan specific to your needs. Packages are available with discounted pricing.

Ozone Therapy FAQs

OZONE IV
Is ozone IV therapy safe?

When administered by trained medical professionals, ozone therapy has an excellent safety record. Medical ozone is different from environmental ozone. It is produced from pure medical-grade oxygen using calibrated equipment and administered in precise therapeutic concentrations. All ozone therapies at R+R are performed by registered nurses following established clinical protocols.

Do ozone IVs hurt?

No, it feels exactly like a regular vitamin IV. A small blood draw, a brief ozonation step, and then the blood is returned intravenously. Most clients find it completely comfortable.

What is ozone IV best for?

Anyone dealing with circulatory conditions, viral or bacterial infections (including Lyme and Epstein Barr), autoimmunity, inflammation, joint pain, heavy metal or mold toxicity, anti-aging goals, or respiratory issues. It's also excellent as a preventive, immune-boosting protocol for generally healthy individuals.

What is the difference between standard and high-dose ozone?

High-dose IV ozone delivers a higher concentration of ozone and follows a different protocol. A G6PD lab test is required before beginning high-dose IV Ozone to ensure your red blood cells can safely tolerate oxidative therapies, as individuals with G6PD deficiency may be at risk for red blood cell breakdown. This can be completed through an outside provider or through our Functional Medicine practice. Call your local R+R to schedule.

How often should I do IV ozone?

While frequency depends on the individual, we generally recommend 8 consecutive sessions over 4 weeks (2x per week) for meaningful results. Sessions should not exceed 2x per week.

Ozone IV contraindications
Please do not receive Ozone IV therapy if you are allergic to Heparin, currently on blood thinners, uncontrolled heart disease, blood pressure considerations (high or low), active internal bleeding, thrombocytopenia, a history of stroke or MI, seizures, are currently under the influence of alcohol, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. A G6PD lab is required before High-Dose IV Ozone.
OZONE INSUFFLATION
Do ozone insufflations hurt?

Not at all! All forms of insufflation are completely painless and needle-free. Ear and nose are the most straightforward. Rectal and vaginal are performed with a catheter in a private bathroom with lubricant provided and detailed instruction from your nurse.

Who should do ear ozone insufflations?

Anyone with ear infections, sinus infections, brain fog, tinnitus, vertigo, or ear pain. Also beneficial for disease or tumors of the head and neck. Insufflations are safe for children, however if your child has present ear tubes, please consult with your provider before using ozone insufflation

Who should do nasal ozone insufflations?

Anyone with nasal infections, allergies, eye infections or symptoms related to inflammation, or brain fog.

Who should do rectal ozone insufflations?

Rectal ozone can be used for virtually any chronic or acute condition. It is the second-most systemic delivery method after IV. Especially indicated for tumors, inflammation, parasites, chronic inflammatory disease, and for clients who don't have sufficient vein access for Ozone IV.

Who should do vaginal ozone insufflations?

Anyone dealing with lymphatic detox, vaginosis, yeast infections, localized inflammation, reproductive organ conditions, UTIs, or postpartum healing.

How often can I do insufflation?

Ear and nose: up to 3x per week separated by at least one day. Rectal and vaginal: up to 2x daily safely. Our team can recommend a more specific protocol based on your individual needs.

Insufflation contraindications
Ear and nose insufflation have no contraindications outside of children with tubes. Rectal insufflation shares the same contraindications as Ozone IV, plus active hemorrhoids or fissures. Vaginal insufflation is contraindicated during pregnancy or menstruation.
BOOO
How is BOOO different from nose insufflation?

Both target the respiratory system, but BOOO can be directly inhaled into the lungs because the olive oil dilutes and humidifies the ozone, making it safe to breathe. Nose insufflation delivers ozone into the nasal passages and is not inhaled into the lungs. BOOO is the preferred option for any lung or lower respiratory condition.

What does BOOO help with?

Sinus pressure and chronic sinusitis, nasal and airway inflammation, upper respiratory infections, bronchitis, allergies, and tongue and lip tie release recovery. Safe for all ages including infants.

How often can I do BOOO?

BOOO is safe to do daily. It's one of our most gentle and accessible modalities and is a great ongoing maintenance therapy for anyone dealing with chronic respiratory or sinus issues.

BOOO: No contraindications
Breathing Ozonated Olive Oil is safe for all ages, including infants. Daily use is safe.
