What is an iron infusion?

Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies in the world and one of the most undertreated. When your iron levels are low enough to cause symptoms, oral supplementation often isn't enough. Iron infusions deliver iron directly into your bloodstream to restore depleted levels faster and more effectively than oral supplementation alone.

At Restore + Revive, we offer iron infusions using Iron Sucrose (brand name Venofer). Iron infusions deliver iron directly into the bloodstream, providing rapid replenishment of iron into your body, which is helpful for patients with low iron levels or iron deficiency anemia who cannot tolerate or do not respond well to oral iron supplements. By restoring iron levels, it supports red blood cell production and helps improve energy, overall health, and wellbeing.

At R+R, iron infusions are a medically supervised clinical service, not a wellness add-on. A confirmed diagnosis through bloodwork is required before treatment. If you've been told you have iron deficiency anemia, or if you think you're experiencing symptoms and haven't been tested, please contact our team to figure out the right next step.

your appointment

What to expect during your iron infusion

Bloodwork and consultation

If you don’t already have a prescription for an iron infusion from a referring provider, you will need to schedule an appointment with one of our functional medicine providers. During this visit, we will administer a blood panel onsite. Your resutls will guide your iron infusion treatment plan.

Personalized treatment plan

Based on your prescription and/or lab results, our team will create a personalized iron therapy treatment plan tailored to your needs. This plan ensures you receive the right dose and schedule for optimal results.

Pre-infusion check in

On the day of your infusion, one of our registered nurses (RN) will review your vitals and confirm you're ready to proceed. We ask that you eat a light meal beforehand and stay well hydrated.

The iron infusion

The infusion itself is an IV push and takes about 5 minutes to administer, however your first infusion appointment will last approximately 90 minutes to allow proper time for monitoring. All subsequent infusion appointments will be 60 minutes.

Post-infusion

We monitor you briefly after the infusion is complete before you're cleared to go. You may feel tired or have a mild headache afterward. However, many patients notice increased energy within a few days. Full results are typically felt within 2–4 weeks as your body replenishes its iron stores.

Follow up labs

A follow-up blood draw is typically recommended 4–8 weeks after your infusion to assess how your levels have responded. Some patients require a series of infusions and others need only one. Your provider will guide you based on your results.

common questions

Iron Infusion FAQs

Do I need a prescription or referral for iron infusions?

You do not need a prescription for iron infusions. If you are not a functional medicine patient and are referred to us by another doctor, we will need to see appropriate labs prior to your infusion. Contact us to learn more.

What labs are required for an iron infusion?

CBC, CMP, Copper, Transferrin, Iron, TIBC, and Ferritin

‍

How is IV iron different from the IV therapy you offer at R+R?

R+R's standard IV therapy menu delivers vitamins, minerals, and nutrients for wellness, hydration, and recovery and is available to anyone without a medical evaluation. Iron infusions are just an IV push and are a clinically different service that requires a confirmed iron deficiency diagnosis, medical supervision, and a personalized dosing protocol. They are booked and managed through our functional medicine team, not the general IV therapy service.

How many infusions will I need?

This depends on the severity of your deficiency and how your body responds to treatment. Some patients need only a single infusion, others benefit from a short series of two or three. Your provider will review your bloodwork and recommend a protocol, then adjust based on your follow-up labs 4–8 weeks after treatment. Once your iron levels are balanced, we redraw labs every 6-12 months to ensure levels remain optimal.

How quickly will I feel better?

Most patients begin to notice an improvement in energy and fatigue within a few days to a week after their infusion. Full results, including improvements in cognitive function, shortness of breath, and other symptoms are typically felt within 2–4 weeks as your body replenishes its iron stores and red blood cell production normalizes.

Can I get an iron infusion if I’m pregnant?

Yes, iron infusions can be safely administered during pregnancy. The specific form of iron we use is pregnancy-safe and tailored to meet the needs of expecting mothers. However, treatment will be determined based on your individual health assessment, bloodwork, and a consultation with your healthcare provider.

Are there side effects?

Iron infusions are generally very well tolerated. Some patients experience mild and temporary side effects including a metallic taste during the infusion, mild headache, or slight nausea. Serious reactions are rare but possible, which is why all infusions are administered under medical supervision with monitoring throughout. Let your provider know about any known sensitivities or previous reactions to iron preparations before your appointment.

Are iron infusions covered by insurance?

Because IV iron is a medically necessary treatment for a confirmed diagnosis, it may be covered by your health insurance, unlike most wellness therapies at R+R. Coverage depends on your plan and provider network. We recommend calling your insurer before your appointment to ask about coverage for iron infusion therapy. We can provide a superbill and supporting documentation. HSA/FSA funds are accepted.
