How mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy (mHBOT) works

Inside the hyperbaric chamber, air pressure increases to allow your body to absorb significantly more oxygen than it can under normal conditions. Instead of relying solely on red blood cells, oxygen dissolves directly into your plasma and other fluids, reaching tissues that standard circulation can’t access, especially areas that are injured, inflamed, or depleted. This allows oxygen to travel deeper into the body, supporting healing where it’s needed most.

This oxygen-rich environment helps power your cells by supporting mitochondrial function, while also attracting stem cells to areas in need of repair. At the same time, it helps reduce inflammation and supports the immune system’s ability to respond and recover more effectively.

what to expect

Your session in the hyperbaric chamber

Avoid large amounts of fluids before entering. No alcohol within 24 hours. No nicotine within 72 hours. Do not book if you have cold or flu symptoms, blocked ears, or blocked sinuses. mHBOT requires clearance from a provider prior to booking.
Arrive dressed in 100% cotton

We require clients to wear 100% cotton clothing. Loose and comfortable is best and no shoes are worn in the chamber. Please bring socks or slippers. No jewelry, hair clips, or sharp objects. No fragrances of any kind. Cotton Lila and Hayes pajamas are provided if needed.

Enter the chamber

You'll lie or sit comfortably inside the chamber. No electronic devices are permitted. Bring a book or non-electronic reading material. A cup of water and a walkie-talkie to communicate with staff are provided. Sessions take approximately 60 minutes.

Pressure increases gradually

As the chamber pressurizes, you may notice a gentle popping sensation in your ear like ascending or descending in an airplane. This is normal, brief, and passes quickly. Swallowing or yawning helps.

Pressure releases + you exit

Pressure decreases gradually at the end of the session. No downtime — you can return to normal activities immediately. If doing two sessions in one day, a 4-hour minimum wait is required between them.

common questions

mHBOT FAQs

What will I feel during the session?

A gentle popping sensation in the ears as pressure rises and falls like you are on an airplane. This is normal and passes quickly. During the session itself, most clients feel deeply relaxed. Many report reduced pain, improved mental clarity, and a noticeable sense of calm when they exit.

How often should I use the hyperbaric oxygen chamber?

For athletic recovery: 1-4 sessions, once or twice daily with a 4-hour minimum between sessions. For chronic conditions: a minimum of 10 sessions concentrated over a shorter period, then 20–40 maintenance sessions annually. Your provider or R+R's functional medicine team can build a personalized protocol.

What do I wear?

100% cotton loose, comfortable clothing and socks or slippers. No shoes, jewelry, hair clips, or sharp objects. No fragrances of any kind. Cotton pajamas are available if needed.

What can I bring into the chamber?

A book or non-electronic reading material. A cup of water and a walkie-talkie to communicate with staff are provided. No electronic devices are permitted inside the chamber.

What symptoms or conditions do people use the hyperbaric chamber for?
  • Post-concussion symptoms and traumatic brain injury support
  • Chronic fatigue and low energy
  • Lyme disease support
  • Long COVID recovery, including brain fog and fatigue
  • Athletic recovery and performance optimization
  • Post-surgical healing and recovery
  • Skin health, collagen support, and healthy aging

Because every individual is different, our team can help determine whether mHBOT may be a good fit for your specific goals and health concerns.

Can children use the hyperbaric chamber?

Yes, children of all ages can safely use the chamber with a physician clearance form. A parent or guardian is not required to be inside the chamber but is welcome to join for the child's comfort. The parent must receive clearance from a physician if they choose to join the child.

Is there any downtime after a session?

None at all. You can return to normal activities immediately. If doing two sessions in one day, a minimum 4-hour wait between sessions is required.

Are there any side effects?

There are little to no side effects. The most common side effect is inner ear issues, pain, or discomfort due to the rise and decline of atmospheric pressure. If you are experiencing a cold, have sinus issues, or have a history of ear trauma or surgeries, this may not be the right treatment option for you. Please discuss this with your medical provider before further considering this type of treatment.

Hyperbaric chamber contraindications
mHBOT may not be appropriate for those with: untreated pneumothorax, COPD, certain chemotherapy drugs, pacemakers, cochlear implants, implanted neurological devices, pregnancy, or seizure disorders (evaluation required before proceeding).

Do not book if you have active cold or flu symptoms, have consumed alcohol within 24 hours, have used nicotine within 72 hours, have blocked ears or sinuses, ear barotrauma, or recent excessive CO2 exposure.

If you have a condition or implanted device not listed here, please call before booking and we will assess your suitability. R+R's functional medicine providers are available to help.
